About Su Happ

Susan was elected Jefferson County District Attorney in November 2008 with 56% of the vote, becoming the first Democratic District Attorney in Jefferson County since 1938. She was re-elected in November 2012 without opposition. In 2014, Susan ran for Wisconsin Attorney General. On August 1, 2014, Susan was named a Wisconsin Rising Political Star by MSNBC’s Chuck Todd and her Harley ad in the primary election won best Wisconsin Democratic commercial in 2014. Susan won a three-way primary with 52% of the vote and won all 72 counties in the state.

Born and raised in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where both her parents worked as public school teachers, Susan learned the value of hard work. Throughout high school and college, Susan worked as a Residential Living Assistant at St. Coletta’s, a campus for developmentally disabled children and adults. Susan graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994 with distinction, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Russian. Prior to graduation, Susan attended Moscow State University and worked for the United Press International (UPI). 

Susan graduated from UW-Madison Law School in 1998, and then returned home to Jefferson to practice law. In 2005, Susan started her own practice specializing in criminal and juvenile law, and working as a Guardian ad Litem protecting children and vulnerable adults. Susan ran her own law firm until she was elected Jefferson County District Attorney in 2008.

As District Attorney, Susan is responsible for the prosecution of all crimes in Jefferson County, and is also the administrator for the District Attorney’s office including budgeting and staffing. Since serving as District Attorney, Susan has saved Jefferson County taxpayers over $250,000 by cutting back on costs, working with other departments and running the District Attorney’s office just as she operated her business.

Throughout her life, Susan has been actively involved in her community, working and volunteering in Jefferson and various community service organizations. Susan has participated in mock trial presentations sponsored by the Wisconsin Association of Trial Lawyers and has presented at the WACDL OWI Seminar, Wisconsin Association of Homicide Investigators and the International Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Association.

Susan serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin District Attorneys’ Association and is the Past Chair of the Criminal Law Section of the Wisconsin State Bar. Susan also serves as a member of the Jefferson County Heroin Task Force, Jefferson County Sexual Assault Response Team, Jefferson County Chiefs and Sheriff’s Association, Jefferson County Alcohol Treatment Court, the Reducing Recidivism Coalition, Community Coordinated Response Team (Domestic Violence), Wisconsin State Bar, Jefferson County Bar Association, Rotary Club of Jefferson and St. John’s Catholic Church in Jefferson.  Susan served as Vice President of the Board of Directors for Tomorrow's Hope, Inc. of Jefferson during her tenure from 1999 to 2015. 

Susan is an avid runner and enjoys reading, and spending time with her daughter, Haley, and her husband, Dale Rupprecht. Susan also enjoys riding her Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
